WHAT YOU DIDN'T LEARN IN YOGA TEACHER TRAINING - JANUARY 2020

What You Didn’t Learn In Yoga Teacher Training

January 2020

Let’s just say it: our industry is broken.

In 2017 the yoga industry raked in $80 billion globally, $16 billion in the US alone. I became fired up when I heard this. If yoga is so profitable, why are yoga studios closing left and right? Why are yoga teachers paid so poorly and struggling to support themselves?

Let me break it down for you.

It starts with yoga teacher training. Trainees learn about asana. If it’s a solid training they’ll study the yoga sutra. It’s an important foundation.

What Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) students DON’T learn in their training is how to run a business.

Almost every yoga teacher I’ve mentored has no clue how to make teaching yoga their full-time business, much less be profitable, save for retirement, pay taxes properly, or own their value as a healing professional.

You have a choice. You can continue treating teaching like an expensive hobby or start owning the fact that you’re a healing professional who uses the ancient science of yoga (or reiki, bodywork, etc) to transform lives.

I’ve you’ve ever thought, “yoga teaching will never bring me my bread and butter,” I invite you to consider that it IS possible, but not if you wait for some far off time in the future to create it. When was the last time you took yourself on a vacation? Have you paid off your debt? Are your taxes paid on time and in full? Maybe your spouse pays them for you, which is great. But if he/she weren’t around tomorrow, could you stand on your own? Feeling lost is the reality that many yoga teachers live in, and it’s NOT okay.

If you think spreading yourself thin teaching classes at several different studios equates to being recession proof, tax proof, and running a RESILIENT business, you’re wrong. Teaching in studios is not a business model.

How do I know? Two of the biggest yoga studios in the US closed down in March of 2019. They were home to some of the most prolific teachers in the world. Digest that for a minute.

Gone are the days where yoga teachers were a rare breed. Teaching yoga is the new black because it’s how studios make money. I have watched brand new practitioners be sold into 200 hour trainings before they had 3 classes under their belt. Yes, I’m serious.

If you refuse to teach a studio class for $20, it doesn’t matter. There’s always a new, hungry teacher, fresh out of teacher training, who will take on that class for no money.

And there you are, left with a huge amount of talent and no idea how to advocate for yourself, no idea how to own your value or be paid what you’re really worth. It’s a vicious cycle and it’s NOT working anymore. Teachers aren’t being compensated, so the good ones are quitting or burning themselves out with a side hustle.

What about the, “I don’t need to make money for this, I’m just doing it as a good deed” yoga people?  I’m all for being philanthropic, but true generosity comes from abundance. The more we have (time, energy, money) the more we can give. True generosity is NOT the same as teaching for a pittance.

So who is this industry really serving? The students aren’t getting results because no commitment is required and the “cheaper by the dozen” mentality isn’t serving teachers. More studios are closing than opening. Who is really winning? This whole industry is stuck in a rut.

But YOU don’t have to be.

You also don’t have to own a studio or live out of a suitcase to be successful.

You know you’re smart and talented. You know what you’re earning right now does not match up with the life-changing tools you bring to your students.

I’m here to call you up into something bigger.

Plain and simple, yoga healed me and supported me through some of the most difficult transitions of my life. Yoga has transformed me, and I am called to pass on this knowledge in a completely immersive, supportive way. THIS is why I teach. It’s my deepest passion and I know you share this with me. You heal others because it’s your dharma, your calling, AND you can create wealth for yourself and others. These things are not mutually exclusive.

I’m also here to shout that there’s no point in being part of an industry that’s broken. SO STOP TRYING TO FIT IN.

How do you learn to forge your own way with equal parts ancient wisdom and modern world business chops?

By immersing yourself in it, just like you did in your 200 hour training.

It’s time for a change. In my new 16 week program, What You Didn’t Learn In Yoga Teacher Training, you’re going to learn how to run a yoga or healing based business that’s profitable, makes a bigger impact, and furthers your life’s purpose. You’re going to learn how to work with ONLY the right people who value you.

What else?

You’re going to learn how to be a top notch money manager. The more you have, the more generous you can be.

You’re going to learn business strategy. Not just woo-woo goal setting, but creating REAL action plans to achieve your goals while making an impact. The result? You have clarity. You know what you’re selling, how to price it, who your ideal client is and how to market to them without being sleazy, AND how to track your progress along the way. No more tossing wet noodles at the wall and seeing what sticks.

You’re going to learn how to give your students tangible results by providing them with appropriate programs to meet their needs. You’ll walk away knowing how structure online courses, one-on-one lessons, and retreats. You’ll be ready to SELL THEM consistently and at a price which allows you to thrive.

You’re going to learn that “likes” do not equate to revenue, and how to discern which forms of social media actually support you. No more time wasted down that rabbit hole.

Most importantly, you’re going to be fully supported as you become an even stronger yoga teacher AND business person. You CAN be both. Imposter syndrome? Fears? Boundary issues? No problem. You’ve got this and I’ve got you.

We’re going to dive into all of this together. It’s going to be juicy. It’s going to be triggering, but you’re ready to grow. I believe in you.

You don’t need to be part of something that’s broken anymore. It’s time to take the industry that raised you and walk it into the future.

Here’s how we do it:

What You Didn’t Learn In Yoga Teacher Training:

A 16 week program with Sara Intonato, beginning January 2020.

-2 live 60 minute webinar trainings per week (replays available for those who can’t tune in live)

-Worksheets with action steps for each lesson to ensure implementation

-A private facebook group for support. Share your wins, receive personalized help through challenges, and feel how your growth is catapulted when you stop feeling isolated.

That’s not all! Because….presents!
As a bonus, all students will receive access to my full library of yoga sutra webinars, 20+ lessons diving into ancient, authentic wisdom for the modern world ($2,000 value).

Why me? I’ve been a yoga teacher for 16 years, I have walked in your shoes. My background in marketing and organizational behavior gave me the smarts to stop chasing more yoga certificates and instead make SMART investments in my business. Like what? A business and leadership coach, money mindset trainings, and beyond. Only after I did this in 2016 did I crack the 6 figure ceiling, step out of struggle mode, and begin to thrive. I make annual trips to immerse myself at the source of yoga. I am passionate about showing brilliant yoga teachers how to build profitable businesses without diminishing the authenticity of their craft.

If I can be a successful yoga teacher without selling out, so can you.

Space is limited to ensure personal attention. Yoga teachers, studio owners, and other healing professionals will be part of this vetted group. It doesn’t matter if you are single or married, 25 or 65 years old, a new teacher or 20 year veteran. What DOES matter is your mindset. I am only receiving students who are being called into their bigger vision and ready to take the next step of making their goals a reality. Don’t wait and miss this amazing opportunity.

I take my role as group creator quite seriously. All my groups are no whining zones.

You’re receiving this invitation because I know you’re talented, intelligent, and primed for growth.

TEACHERS ONLY RETREAT IN MONTAUK! FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 7, 2020

Teachers Only Yoga Retreat in Montauk!

FRIDAY, February 7, 2020

This October, I’m hosting a yoga retreat just for teachers.

If you are nodding your head yes to any of these, you’re not alone.

Teachers’ challenges are unique, and it’s up to us to move through them together. Here’s how:

Step 1: You’re a student first.

Your teaching career can’t flourish unless you’re showing up for yourself as a student first. If you can’t remember the last time you were truly challenged on the mat, both physically and mentally, how can you lead your students through it? If your practice is stale, how can you lead your students through introspection and inspiration? You can’t, and that’s why you need to go deeper.

I’m here to call you into something deeper. After we go there on the mat, we’re taking a deep dive into the Yoga Sutra. To claim your status as an expert in this field, you must go to the source. There is no substitute.

Step 2: Take an honest look at your career
Next, we delve into a hot seat style coaching session around your career. With leadership from me and support from your peers, you will find clarity around your business, connect the dots, and you’ll leave with an empowering action plan to take your own work to the next level.

Step 3: Self Care. You can’t teach it if you don’t know it.

We’re covering all the bases. Ashtanga practice, meditation, rest, organic food (which is both clean and delicious) time in nature, and surprises from me. I want to show you how great it feels to be nurtured. Your students receive this, so why not you?

The final product:
You’re sent back into the world rested, rejuvenated, and with clarity around the next steps to move you and your business forward.

Ready to join me?

“Sara provides an oasis in my personal desert. First, she offers no judgment when I have not been diligent and provides positive motivation for me to stay on course with my yoga practice.” -J.D.

“The wisdom, kindness, humanity and depth of knowledge that Sara has is palpable. Having someone to ask questions to has allowed me to grow in a safe and nurturing environment. No question is too small, whether about progression or position in my asana or how my spiritual practice has affected my parenting.” – K.A.

“What happened when I started working with Sara was an immediate shift. Thanks to her guidance on building a practice that is challenging and nourishing and perfectly suited to me, I feel squarely back on my path of yoga study and it feels so great! The results have been numerous. Immediately, my classes and students benefited, as I felt more grounded, confident and able to be most present with my students. I have felt more inspired in both my practice and teaching. Perhaps most important of all is that I’ve increased trust in myself. As I continue to push to new limits, either on my yoga mat or off the mat as an educator, mentor and business owner, I know that my yoga practice and Sara, with her brilliant guidance when I run into obstacles along the way, will support me.” -N.C.

ONE DAY YOGA RETREAT IN MONTAUK! SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 8, 2020

It’s your time and you’re ready. One Day Yoga Retreat in Montauk!

SATURDAY, February 8, 2020

Are you a disciplined person in your life but struggle to take time for yourself? Do you skip the personal attention you know you need to be at your best? Do you put your focus on your other responsibilities?

If you are nodding your head yes to any of these, you’re not alone.

Part of being a high achiever is having a full life. Often this comes with putting everyone and everything else ahead of yourself. But what is the cost of doing this?

“I was feeling unfulfilled by my personal practice and I was losing faith in my pursuits as a yoga teacher and mentor. My personal practice had become all about preparing practices for my students, which was not enough for me.” -N.C.

“I have been plagued with physical ailments that are a result of my taking my responsibilities too seriously at times. In the early 1990’s I had a severe disc compression at C6/C7 andI needed surgery. While successfully alleviating pain from the physical malady, it not address the root cause – lack of stress management. The neck pain came back and required frequent medication, icing, rest or just plain suffering with discomfort.” JD

I know you.

You are done with the noise and overconsumption of unnecessary stimuli.

You’re craving quiet space for physical, mental, emotional, spiritual healing.

You know there is a better way, but you can’t find it on your own.

That’s what we do together in Montauk. And it doesn’t take two weeks. It doesn’t require a long plane ride. It takes ONE DAY.

I can help, but only if you’re ready.

This work is NOT for people who are addicted to drama.

This retreat is NOT for those who’d rather stay in excuse mode than create change.

It IS for people who trust that the quiet space cultivated by spiritual practices gives them real results in their lives.

What kind of results?

“Since doing regular yoga practice with Sara, my neck and shoulder pain went from 6-9 on a scale of 10 to under 2. Other physical ailments, like indigestion or occasional migraine headaches also subsided. Yoga was the one variable in my life that I changed during this period of time, so I am absolutely sure it was the main driver to these improvements in my health.” -J.D.

“I approach the world with mindfulness, self awareness, and patience. What started as a physical practice with the guidance of Sara has become a way of viewing the world on a daily basis.” -K.A.

For this one day together, we will be fully focused– (no phones allowed)–on taking a deeper dive into your habits, your spiritual growth, and allowing your yoga and meditation to spill over into every other part of your life.

Yoga is not an escape from life. It’s not something that you do and then ignore the rest of the day. Rather, yoga and meditation are tools which ignite the spark. They allow all of your energy, your vitality, and awareness to spill over into the rest of your day so that you feel supported, healed, and ALIVE.

This retreat is not an endpoint. It is a jumping-off point. It is a place to gather inspiration to use your spiritual practices amidst the daily grind. Here’s how this one day transformation retreat provides this for you:

2 WEEK INDIA YOGA RETREAT | JANUARY 19th – FEBRUARY 1st, 2019

Join me on a Yoga Retreat of a lifetime!
January 19th – February 1st, 2019

Maybe you’re nervous. Maybe you’re concerned about all the what-ifs that could come up. That’s why I waited until my 10th trip to India to finally take students of mine there! I’m now experienced enough to lead people through all the wonders India has to offer, and I’ve hired even greater support to help me do it, so the level of service and support will be exceptional.

India is a very special place, there’s no way you can possibly prepare for it and I’m really happy to be able to put together a trip that offers the magic of India. We’ll be practicing yoga, meditation and yoga philosophy study to make the experience a very rich one, not just externally, but internally, as well as enjoying a really smooth, comfortable, luxurious adventure.

We start in Delhi, the capital of India and then head to Varanasi, the spiritual heart of the country and one of the most ancient mystical places in the world. The energy there is powerful, and we’ll see and process sights that we would never witness anywhere else in the world! From there, we go to Agra to see the Taj Mahal, the famously beautiful landmark before traveling to Amritsar in the north to visit the Golden Temple, the holiest place of the Sikh religion. An incredibly special part of this trip is that we’ll see many religions all living together. Our final stop on the trip will be to a very special retreat venue called Ananda in the Himalayas in the city of Rishikesh, which is a beautiful spot in the mountains just along the Ganges River, the holy river.

Client Testimonials

Sara Yoga did an amazing job with a bucket list vacation. It had the perfect combination of yoga, yoga philosophy, adventure, luxury, and spirituality. It was an epic trip of a lifetime!

Meeting Sara Intonato has been life altering in the best of ways. I have found a new path that I am truly enjoying and diving into. The movement of yoga has made me feel great outside, but Sara’s insights and guidance have made me feel great inside as well. Her guided practice and meditation is priceless!

Sara was sensitive to our every need and sincere in making sure that every one of the retreat participants was well taken care of and had their needs met.

Sara’s retreat exceeded my expectations on many levels. From a logistics perspective, I was impressed that every detail was meticulously taken care of for us so that all we had to do was take in all that our venue had to offer.

I so appreciated Sara’s yoga and philosophy teachings as they added a certain richness to the retreat. I appreciated Sara’s deep knowledge of, and many years of experience with, Ashtanga and her dedication to the practice is inspiring. I enjoyed the opportunity to learn from Sara.

SEMI PRIVATE INTENSIVE in Montauk! SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2017

It’s your time and you’re ready. One Day Yoga Retreat in Montauk!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 14, 2017

Are you ready to step out of your life and away from the noise?

This October I’m hosting an intimate, chic, half-day retreat

in beautiful Montauk.

This is an experience like no other, far beyond your typical Monday morning yoga class (which let’s face it, has just become another item on your to do list.)

Consider this your chance to get away from the pressures of work, home, and your self-imposed need for perfection.

This is a day with a difference.

After years of hosting destination retreats, I have created an environment to support your self-care, self-discovery, and self-transformation.

My aim here is to combine intensive yoga practice with an in-depth awareness of technique, your own mind, and your own anatomy so that together we can set you up for a more stable practice with longevity in mind.

The results of this intensive yoga experience will reach far beyond a half day.

By giving yourself the space to be a student, you will receive the knowledge, the time, and the inspiration you need to nurture yourself, – today and forever.

This is not about powering through and trying out the most testing poses.

This is about seeing a shift.

It’s about changing your pace, getting a whole new perspective, and renewing your love for the practice.

Together we will step off the grid, and immerse ourselves in awareness, presence, and intention.

Hosted at a jaw-dropping private water-front location, built entirely out of reclaimed materials, you’ll have the opportunity to dig deep into your own presence, person, and perspective.

This is that “more” you’ve been searching for.

Because I want this session to be truly intimate and transformational for all, I’m keeping the numbers low.

I have six spots available, and once they’re gone, they’re gone. If you’re ready for your next step, join us now.

ASHTANGA YOGA WEEKEND WORKSHOP

MON, JULY 17 – FRI, JULY, 2017

Monday, July 17, 2017

July 17 -21 Intensive includes daily morning Mysore classes, three afternoon workshops, and yoga theory class.

Mysore 6:15am8:15am, Monday through Friday
Mysore is the traditional format for practicing Ashtanga Yoga. Led classes are a fantastic way to learn about the vinyasa, but Mysore-style is where you follow your own breath and deepen your focus and meditation skills.

Monday 7/17:
3-5pm Learn to Float

When breath and movement are in union, our practice becomes graceful and filled with ease. Focusing on the vinyasas of Surya Namaskara, the Sun Salutations, this workshop will provide you with invaluable techniques to help you bring lightness into your practice. All levels are welcome to attend.

Tuesday 7/18:
3-5pm Elements of Arm Balancing

Arm balances show up throughout the Ashtanga sadhana. From the first jump back in the Sun Salutations, the opportunity to balance appears again and again. When we commit to these opportunities to embrace the work of arm balancing, we begin to develop strength and deepen our focus.

Wednesday 7/19:
3-5pm Deeper into Backbends

Explore the alignment and actions of Ashtanga’s Primary & Intermediate Series backbends. Find the balance between organization and surrender that will allow your body to go deeper into the postures. This workshop is open to practitioners of all levels.

Thursday 7/20:
8:15am-9am Yoga theory

Delve deeply into the yoga sutras and gain tangible tools to apply this ancient wisdom 24/7. This philosophy reminds us yoga is a lifestyle which is meant to help us in every aspect of our lives.

Friday 7/21:

Any flight you take must arrive in Cusco, Peru by 11:00am on Saturday, May 6, 2017.
This is important in order to give yourself ample time to acclimate to the altitude. Please plan your return flight to depart Cusco, Peru no earlier than 4pm on Saturday, May 13, 2017.

Q. What is the weather like in the Sacred Valley in May?
A. May is one of the driest months in the Sacred Valley, with rain being unlikely. Daytime temperatures will peak between 68-70 degrees Fahrenheit. Low temperatures will fall to 40 degrees during the night.

Q. Do I need to worry about the altitude?
A. The staff at Willka T’ika, our venue, guide us step by step as we adjust to the altitude of 11,000 feet above sea level. We spend our first night (May 6th), in a small hotel in Cusco. Getting as much rest/sleep as possible is crucial during the first 24 hours. Our guides provide us with nourishing food and cocoa leaf tea, a natural and plant based antidote to altitude sickness. Hydration, calm activities, and keeping the body warm are the best prevention.

Q. Are payment plans available?
A. Yes! Those who register in August 2016 may make 7 payments (once per month). Those who register before or during the month of December 2016 may make 4 payments, also once per month. The final balance is due by March 1, 2017.

Q. What is appropriate gratuity to give to the resort staff?
A. The resort has asked each person to bring an envelope with $10/day ($80/total) upon arrival to distribute amongst the Willka T’ika staff. Gratuity for our private guide for the week is at the discretion of the guest.

In 2005 Sara made her first trip to Mysore, India to study under Guru Sri K. Pattabhi Jois and deepen her connection to the Ashtanga Yoga lineage. She continues to make annual trips there, furthering her practice with R. Sharath Jois, Guruji’s grandson whom has guided the tradition since his grandfather’s death in 2009.

Sara received her level one authorization to teach from R. Sharath Jois, director of the KPJAYI in Mysore in 2013. She was given her level two authorization in 2014. She is honored to perpetuate the lineage of Ashtanga Yoga. In New York, Sara remains connected to the tradition as a student of senior teacher Eddie Stern. Lead With Love Retreat - SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 12, 2017
Is your life controlled by fear or directed by love?

Most spiritual traditions recognize love as the greatest healing force.

Yet, our lives are motivated by fear.
Our world is consumed by it.

We spew hateful words
We act defensively
We criticize and judge because we are afraid.

Love is the most fundamental energetic vibration. When we connect to love we rise above these lower behaviors and operate from a higher place. It’s the most vital action we can take.

But nobody puts “connecting to love” on their to-do list.

What if you did?

Only when you forgive yourself and love yourself can you really BE yourself.

Only when you are operating from your most centered, loving place can you live your best life.

Here’s how:

Feedback from January’s mini-retreat

“This retreat surpassed my expectations. I loved how much thought, care and generosity were put into each aspect of the day.”

“I thought it would be the asana practice, but my favorite part of the retreat actually was the philosophy. I really enjoyed Sara’s perspective and how I was truly able to leave the retreat questioning and reflecting on my life and my journey.”

“The primary series class provided so much instruction in addition to being a fluid practice, it was like a workshop on its own. The inspiring and spiritual philosophy and meditations were wonderful. The whole retreat was put together so well.”
