How exactly will the yoga sutra move your practice forward?
It’s simple: everyone loves yoga at first. It’s intoxicating.
But if you’re on the path to practice for a lifetime, as I am, then you have to be prepared for when the going gets tough. Because it WILL get tough.
I promise I’m not being a Debbie Downer here. Suffering (duhka in Sanskrit) is an inevitable part of the human experience. While we certainly can’t control other people or the choices they make, we can absolutely minimize the fallout. Patanjali himself remind us in the Yoga Sutra (sutra 2.16 to be exact) that “future suffering can be avoided”.
Worry, stress, anxiety. THESE are the pieces we can control to minimize future suffering.
I’m sharing this with you today because most yoga classes barely scratch the surface of the yoga sutra (and put a heavy emphasis on asana, poses, instead). The result? You have millions of willing yoga practitioners in the world and only a small percentage really access the full healing potential of this ancient science.
And you can be one of them.
It’s time to check in with yourself.
What have you done to actually take your yoga practice to the deepest possible place off the mat, you know, the other 22.5 hours of the day? What have you done to bolster your ability to stay present even while the s*$t is hitting the fan around you?
Don’t be ashamed. Yoga in the “west” (as they call it in India) often has a “grab and go” approach. It doesn’t encourage practitioners to commit to one teacher and go as deeply into study with them as humanly possible.
You know what does encourage this? The Yoga Sutra (sutra 1.32 to be exact).
So if you’ve been spinning the hamster wheel in the western ways of yoga (ahem, zoom classes) and feel frustrated your practice hasn’t done enough to help you when life gets intense, I feel you.
You don’t have to go across the world to India for months at a time, as I have, to break free from this paradigm.
At least not yet, anyway.
But you do have to take action. It’s your time and you’re ready for the next step.
